The warm climate of this city makes it an all-year-round ideal place to visit. The beaches are clean and the Indian Ocean water is nice and warm for that afternoon beach day. The city has some great attractions within it, of which most are close to one another meaning you spend more time actually doing the things you love than driving to them.
We particularly enjoyed the impressive and beautiful Botanical Garden and Mitchell Park. Having been to markets in a number of cities in India, we were disappointed in Durban's Indian Market. There was a rather numbing commonality among the shops and what they offered for sale. The only positive aspect that comes to mind is that the shop keepers were pleasant and not overly aggressive. The galleries and museums of historic and contemporary African art and artifacts that we visited were moat impressive. Biking along the promenade of Durban's beaches was a special treat, although the rental bikes were disappointingly old and worn out.
All the "tourist" places are good, the harbour is great and a whole lot of great food, i dont eat fish but at the harbour it was so good i had to stop myself. If you are able , travel about 30km north of durban to Balito and visit a place called beach bums... best experience . Travelling in taxis are essential since parking is hard to find and so many nice places to eat and drink you have to be shown around by someone. Ushaka Marine world is also a must when in durban and definitely book a stay in umhlanga rocks beautiful area
Many people are afraid to go to Durban, but I enjoy it every time I go there. The beach is safe, but always be mindful of your valuables. There are so many things to do and enjoy that you do not need to go anywhere else!
I will definitely be returning to Durban in the not-too-distant future. I had visited Durban once before, but did not have the convenience of booking through booking.com. This time, I did it right, and we had a fantastic trip. There was not much to see at the casino (there was some construction happening, and no one in my grouped gambled), but we had a fantastic supper at a steak house on the property. I feel that many of the cheaper properties in the city center have a more dodgy vibe, but ours was situated opposite the marina, and felt a lot more secure. Security is important to the staff, and we felt well looked after.
Umhlanga, Umdloti and Ballito are must visit places when in Durban. If possible avoid the city center as it does not feel very safe. If you have time be sure to go to the Midlands and stay at one of the amazing accommodations there.

One of the most beautiful hotels I’ve stayed. From the artwork hanging on the walls to the flower arrangements- it was executed perfectly. Clearly they take great care in hiring staff who love what they do, are friendly, gracious and pay attention to detail. We ate at three of their restaurants and loved each one. The high tea was wonderful. The Curry Buffet is not to be missed. They even have a gin menu at the bar featuring South African gin, as well as international guns.

Great location; it is directly opposite Gateway shopping Centre. It also has the biggest rooms you will find in Umhlanga including a little kitchen with a microwave and fridge and a little lounge. I was there for the Comrades Marathon and the hotel was kind enough to start breakfast at 3am to cater for all the runners; which was very nice ??
